Elderberry, known for it’s delicious flavor and packed with nutrients and antioxidants is back in the news. This time, it is suggested that elderberries may in fact, prevent severe flu.
According to a new study by the Washington University School of Medicine, they investigated the interplay between the microbiome and high-antioxidant flavonoids from elderberries Using mice as subjects, researchers discovered that a specific microbe can prevent severe flu. According to the release, the presence of DAT (desaminotyrosine), a compound identified as being a metabolite in the gut after the consumption of key flavonoids which can be found in elderberry, actually helps protect against damage from influenza.
Research also showed the health benefits one would get from combining antioxidant-rich flavonoids with probiotics in a single product. So, for instance, mixing elderberry with yogurt is a great way to enhance the immune system.
