It’s no secret grandparents love to spoil their grandchildren. Stocking up on candy and keeping a little extra ice cream in the freezer is typical when they know their grand kids are visiting or sleeping over. While it’s fun to spoil and treat their sweet tooth’s, it’s important that children also need to eat healthy foods. Nutritional value for kids is necessary for them to learn at a young age. This will allow them to feel comfortable trying different foods and put them on a healthy path for the rest of their lives. Here are some tips to get your grand kids to taste healthier foods.
One of the easiest things you can do to keep your grand children on the right path to eating healthier, is to always have fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. Playing outside or running around the house can work up an appetite, so you would do best to have some of these foods on had to provide necessary nutrients for their growing bodies,
Kiwi: These little fruits are one of the more unique looking fruits out there. You can tell immediately from their fuzzy exterior, this sure isn’t an apple! When introducing kiwis to children, start small, by having it already skinned and cut into smaller pieces. The sweet, juicy taste should keep them interested. When they are comfortable with eating the kiwi, try to introduce the bites with the skin attached. Many people don’t know, but there’s a ton of fiber and nutrients in their fuzzy skins.
Carrots: Crunchy, nutritious and versatile, carrots are jam packed with a whole host of nutrients. Whether they are fresh from the garden, skinned full-sized ones from the grocery store, or a bag of baby carrots, these veggies are perfect for when you are on-the-go. They can be even more exciting when paired up with a nutritious dip. Try organic peanut butter, or some delicious hummus to add more flavor and nutrition to every bite.
Celery: This one might be a bit harder to sell. Crunchy and juicy for sure, they might not have the same delightful taste as carrots or kiwis, but they are packed with fiber and other vitamins. One creative way to sell these veggies to your grand kids is to have them already prepped with a little peanut butter and topped with raisins. Typically referred to as “ants on a log” because of their appearance, kids will surely go crazy over the crunchy creative taste.
Have them cook: This one might be the most fun of all. Studies show children are more willing to try and eat healthier foods when they cook it them themselves. This gives the opportunity for children to not only be a part of what is cooked for them to eat, it teaches them some excellent life lessons about organization, cooking, cleaning and more.
These are just a few ideas to help your grand children get the vitamins and minerals in their diet. There are a variety of other ways. Some will work, others wont, but it doesn’t hurt to try new things.
